Career development is important for companies and individuals to create and sustain a continuous learning environment.

The biggest challenge companies face is finding a balance between advancing current employees’ careers while simultaneously attracting and acquiring employees with new skills while for individuals, it is knowing the career-set an organization might be interested in.
It is important to note that the present day companies are after career people not just educated or skilled people because it is easier for a company to manage people who know where they are going. It therefore means that for individuals seeking the best of encounters in their careers must first sit down, plan and develop their careers to suit organizational needs.

Since careers must be planned and developed, it had become pertinent for organizations to manage the careers of people within her structure and construct their activities to suit the further development of the careers of people therein. This is a key role of the human resource person(s).
Career management is important in organization because it is the process through which employees; become aware of their own interests, values, strengths, and weaknesses, obtain information about job opportunities within the company, identify career goals and establish action plans to achieve career goals. Through this, individuals will be motivated to seek for a path that will continually add value to them as to remain  relevant in their career pursuit.

From the organization’s perspective, the failure to motivate employees to plan their careers can result in; a shortage of employees to fill open positions, lower employee commitment and inappropriate use of monies allocated for training and development programs.

From the employees’ perspective, lack of career management can result in: frustration due to lack of personal growth and challenge at work, feelings of not being valued in the company and an inability to find suitable employment, in case of mergers, acquisitions, restructuring, or downsizing.

Career management motivates employees’ energy to invest in their careers, creates awareness of the direction they want their careers to take and enriches them with ability to maintain energy and direction despite barriers they may encounter.
